The Nebraska Cornhuskers recently hired Washington State athletic director Bill Moos to the same position. With that happening, many wanted to connect some dots, with it inevitably leading to current Washington State coach Mike Leach joining his former boss.
According to Mike Leach, that is certainly not happening.
Citing the fact that Nebraska already has a good coach in Mike Riley leading the charge, Leach is already shutting these rumors down in press conferences.
He did say nice things about Moos, “I wish Bill the best, and we just move forward,” Leach said.
Leach would also go on to say his No. 15 Cougars (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) are concentrating on Saturday night's game against Colorado (4-3, 1-3). That is it. Nothing less. Nothing more.
He did go on to say even more nice things about his former boss, however.
He called Moos the best athletic director he ever worked for, in part because he was so honest. Moos hired Leach before the 2012 season to turn around the Cougars' program.
For what it is worth, Mike Leach is doing something pretty special with Washington State since Moos brought him in to salvage the program.
Leach, who is paid $3 million per year, has posted a 35-35 record since his arrival and has led the Cougars to three bowl games in the past four seasons. That doesn't seem so awesome until you realize the program is current ranked and that attendance has soared. The latters is now averaging nearly 32,000 this season at 33,000-seat Martin Stadium, the smallest stadium in the Pac-12.
