Spring Training is right around the corner and the Houston Astros are still without a general manager. Houston has made a number of moves throughout the offseason nonetheless, but one has to imagine they would like to hire a GM sooner rather than later. Former player and head coach Brad Ausmus is reportedly a finalist for the position, per MLB Network on Twitter.
Ausmus played for a number of teams during his MLB career, including the Astros. He's since managed both the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels. But this would be his first GM gig if he is hired by Houston.
The Astros are fresh off of a World Series victory. Nevertheless, former GM James Click and the ball club parted ways following the 2022 campaign. James Click and owner Jim Crane reportedly didn't see eye-to-eye on various issues which led to their falling out. But Click's firing was still shocking since Houston had just won the World Series.
Many people around the MLB world expected the Astros to hire a new GM early in the offseason. But that obviously hasn't come to fruition.
Another finalist for the position is Atlanta Braves VP of Scouting Dana Brown. MLB Network listed both Brown and Ausmus as the reported leading finalists for the Astros' GM job. But there could still be other candidates in the running.
In the end, Houston will likely make their decision prior to the beginning of the 2023 season. But there are certainly no guarantees on a timeline.
We will provide updates on this situation as they are made available.
