The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to bounce back from a 90-win season that ended in the Wild Card Game. The roster is filled with stars, young and old, as they look to make it back to the World Series, which they have not done in over a decade. They might be looking for an old friend from their glory days to join them.

According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals have had “increased conversations” about bringing back Albert Pujols and that “interest is growing” about the possibility. The 42-year-old would serve as a bench hitter and backup for Paul Goldschmidt at first base.

Pujols left St. Louis after the 2011 seasons after a phenomenal 11-year stint. He helped bring home two World Series championships and won three MVP awards while establishing himself as one of the best players of the 2000s. He left for the Los Angeles Angels after the second championship. A reunion with the Cardinals was close to happening last season after he was released miseason in 2021, but he opted to join the Los Angeles Dodgers instead.

The Cardinals' have expressed interest in Pujols earlier this offseason. Although his best days are very far behind him, the idea of using him as a pinch hitter in what could be his final season would make for a very nice end to a Hall of Fame career.
