The Murray State Racers are one of many teams working within the coaching carousel of the NCAA. After seven seasons as the Racers head coach, Matt McMahon was hired as the head coach of the LSU Tigers. Former Racers coach Steve Prohm is heading back to Murray State to fill the head coaching vacancy.

ESPN basketball analyst Jeff Goodman tweeted the news Friday morning.

Murray State announced the hiring early Friday afternoon. According to the team's press release, Prohm is the perfect man for the job.

“As we envisioned the ideal profile for the next Murray State Men's Basketball head coach, it remained abundantly clear a commitment to character, integrity, student-athlete development, community, family and competitive excellence were critically important. Steve Prohm represents, reflects and personifies these, and many more, qualities,” Murray State Director of Athletics, Kevin Saal said.

Prohm has a long history with the Racers. He was the assistant coach from 2006 up until his promotion to head coach in 2011. Prohm led the team until 2015 when he passed the torch to McMahon, his former assistant coach.

He spent 2015 to 2021 as the head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones. The Cyclones finished the regular season with a winning record of 20-11.

Prohm will be the 17th head coach of the NCAA team, and a public announcement is set for noon on Monday, March 28.
