In Max Scherzer's seven year tenure with the Washington Nationals, the accomplished pitcher dominated at the highest level. He was a perennial All-Star, won two Cy Young awards, brought home a World Series in 2019, and finished amongst the top of MVP voting consistently. Scherzer displayed the talents of a true ace, whether it be his availability from a lack of injuries, or his steadiness to continuously outperform other teams.

This past season, the former Nationals' ace was stuck on a struggling team that likely wouldn't have made the playoffs. Scherzer was also going to be a free agent, meaning that a trade was almost inevitable. He, along with teammate Trae Turner, ended up in Los Angeles for a chance to win a title.

That didn't happen. The Dodgers were shockingly ousted by the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. As Scherzer enters free agency this winter, the likelihood of him returning to Washington is highly unlikely, even though there is interest from his former organization.

The 37 year old is at a point in his career where he wants to win. Though he clearly enjoyed his time in Washington, the Nationals are not in the running to make it to the playoffs. Rather, possible playoff teams such as the Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, Angels, and Padres could all be suitors for the prized veteran looking to reach the World Series.
