The 2019 NBA Draft has not disappointed after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski predicted there would be an “extraordinary number of trades” during the draft. So far, the Atlanta Hawks have moved up, the Timberwolves moved up and multiple teams have reached for players that were expected to go much lower on draft boards.

One of the most notable teams of the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft was the Boston Celtics, who had three first round picks to their name when the draft began.

With the 14th overall pick, the C’s selected Romeo Langford and with the 22nd overall pick, the team nabbed Grant Williams. Both of these were smart selections of high-IQ players that tumbled down draft boards.

For the 24th overall pick, the Celtics opted to trade away the pick to the Phoenix Suns along with Aron Baynes for a 2020 Milwaukee Bucks first round pick the Suns had in the coffers from the Eric Bledsoe trade.

With the 24th overall pick, the Suns selected Ty Jerome out of the University of Virginia to fill the team’s glaring need at the point guard position.

At first, Baynes’s inclusion in the deal was not apparent, but reports began filtering in about him being included in the deal after the pick movement had been previously reported:

For the Celtics, trading away Baynes opens up room for Grant Williams and Robert Williams (the Williamses) to share minutes in the frontcourt as soon as next season, as the team pivots from contention to a soft rebuild after Kyrie Irving leaves in free agency this offseason.
