DeMarcus Cousins is now officially a free man. Days after being released by the Houston Rockets, the four-time All-Star can now sign with any team in the league he so chooses.

NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic confirms Cousins' current free agent status:

DeMarcus Cousins signed with Houston prior to the start of the campaign. He played 25 games with the team before the Rockets front office decided that they wanted to go in another direction this season, leading to their decision to waive the 6-foot-10 big man.

Cousins has been linked to several teams from around the league, with the Los Angeles Lakers being one of them. He signed with the Lakers in the summer of 2019, but was unable to suit up for the team due to a season-ending ACL injury even before the campaign started. He was later released by L.A., but his contributions to the team outside the basketball court were rewarded by the Lakers' decision to give him a 2020 championship ring.

Despite his good standing with the Lakers, it appears that DeMarcus Cousins is not on the team's radar right now. The defending champs are in dire need of some depth in their frontcourt, but reports state that Cousins is not one of the players they are considering.

One team that reportedly has Cousins in their sights is the Miami Heat. The defending Eastern Conference champions have had a rough start to their campaign, and they too seem to need some additional height on their squad. As such, it is very much possible that DeMarcus Cousins ends up taking his talents to South Beach.
