The Boston Celtics tried to give their coaching staff a boost by hiring Fairmont State coach Joe Mazzulla as an assistant coach.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Mazzulla and the Celtics reached an agreement on Sunday. The Fairmont head coach reportedly drew the attention of the Celtics' front office during his stint with their NBA D-League team, the Maine Red Claws, before he returned to coach in college.
Article Continues BelowMazzulla started as an assistant at Fairmont State before he was named head coach in 2017. In his first season as head coach, he had a 21-8 record with the Falcons. Fairmont State finished third in the Mountain East Conference with a 17-5 conference record.
Mazzulla also had a successful playing career in college. He played with the West Virginia Mountaineers from 2007 to 2011. He was part of the team that made the Final Four back in 2010 under Bob Huggins. The Mountaineers made noise with a huge upset win against Kentucky in the Elite Eight.
In Boston, Mazzulla will be assisting Brad Stevens, who also made his mark in college basketball before moving to the NBA. Stevens led Butler to an unprecedented run in 2010, when the Bulldogs made the national title game. They eventually lost to Duke University, but the surprising run paved the way for a career in the NBA.
