Celtics’ GM Danny Ainge says Boston doesn’t have a hole on its roster

The Boston Celtics stood pat on their roster during the NBA trade deadline frenzy a couple of weeks ago. And it seems more than likely that team president Danny Ainge will keep his roster unchanged for the rest of the season.

In fact, former player-turned-executive doesn't believe that Boston needs to fill in any more holes or missing pieces in their roster, per Steve Bulpett of The Boston Herald.

“We’re just waiting,” Ainge said. “We don’t really have a hole in our roster. Hopefully, knock on wood, nothing happens, but going into the playoffs we may need to fill a specific role or spot, but right now we don’t. We have a lot of guys, and we’re starting to get healthy. I mean, we’re just a week or two away from being totally healthy.”

The Celtics are one of the deepest teams in the league with guys like Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown, and Terry Rozier coming off their bench. In addition, coach Brad Stevens has a ton of flexibility and versatility at his expense, with players able to play multiple positions.

Prior to the start of the season, many penciled in the Celtics as the Golden State Warriors' dance partner for the NBA championship in June. With stars Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward coming back into the fold to a young team that pushed to as far as Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, many thought Boston had the talent to match-up with the defending champions.

However, it seems like Boston's depth has given the team more problems rather than solutions. Some players have struggled with their roles thus far. Young studs Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum both had to make significant sacrifices this year and take lesser roles with Irving as the lead man.

Despite the open roster spot, it might not make sense for them to integrate another piece to add to a team that is still struggling to find the right formula to be more consistent.

It seems like it may be better for Boston to stand pat once again for a run at the title. Without a doubt, they have the talent to do so. But first, they need to iron out the wrinkles with the pieces they already have to figure it out in time for the post-season.
