Jayson Tatum canned a game-winning jumper from the corner with just over a second remaining in the Boston Celtics' 104-102 win over the New York Knicks on Friday night, and afterward, Kemba Walker was thrilled for his new teammate:
“That kid is so talented,” Walker said, according to Tom Westerholm of MassLive.com. “I’m happy for him, and I’m happy he made that shot. That was a huge big-time shot, and I’m happy we went to him. Hopefully that keeps him confident, that can really just get something going for us. Unbelievable play.”
Tatum finished with 24 points off 9-of-17 shooting, making four three-pointers.
It was just the latest strong effort of the season for the 21-year-old, who is averaging 22 points per game through the first five games of the season.
Walker is now in a situation where he no longer has to be relied upon as the sole option in this scenarios, but he is enjoying the luxury of having other guys who can make that shot:
“I probably would have took that a lot of times back in Charlotte, but I mean, I don’t mind,” added Walker. “I like having other guys being able to take that shot.”
The Celtics improved to 4-1 on the season with the win and will now get an extended rest before embarking on a three-game road trip which begins with a meeting against Walker's former Charlotte Hornets team on Tuesday.
Walker scored 33 points in the win over the Knicks and has now logged three straight 30-point games. He is averaging 26.2 points per game thus far this season.
