The Dallas Mavericks have not had a great start to the season, with a mixture of injuries and the firing of general manager Nico Harrison. They've had Cooper Flagg playing point guard as their options are limited with Kyrie Irving sidelined, and their offense is one of the worst in the league.
A start like this could cause the Mavericks to start picking up the phones for trades, and one player rumored to be in those talks is Anthony Davis, according to ESPN's Tim MacMahon.
“Multiple team sources said the Mavs, who are 4-11 and outside the playoff picture in the West, will also explore the trade market for Davis, the 10-time All-Star big man who was the headliner in the return of the Luka Doncic deal, as part of that process before this season's deadline,” MacMahon wrote.
Davis has only played five games this season as he continues to deal with a calf injury, and in total, he's only played 14 games for the Mavericks since being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers last season. When Davis is on the floor, he's one of the most dominant big men in the league, but the Mavericks have rarely seen that version of him because of injuries.
Now, it looks like the Mavericks want to see what they can get for Davis, and they may be looking for assets or young players to fill out the group they have now. At the same time, they haven't been able to see what the true potential of this team could be when everybody is healthy, and they most likely won't know until later in the year when Irving comes back.
It may be too late at that point, and it depends on how serious the Mavericks are about moving on from Davis. As of now, they're hoping that he can return to the court soon, and he seems to be making good progress.
