The NBA of today is way different from that of years past. From game rules to the amount of money being thrown in, a lot have definitely changed. It can also be recalled that players were not as active in voicing out their opinions on different social issues before, as it usually resulted to fines. But now, the NBA and the NBPA even encourages them to do so.

A letter was recently sent to the players, which was co-signed by NBA commissioner Adam Silver and NBPA Executive Director Michelle Roberts, that asks them to be more outspoken and use their stature as a platform to promote positive change, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

“None of us operates in a vacuum. Critical issues that affect our society also impact you directly. Fortunately, you are not only the world’s greatest basketball players — you have real power to make a difference in the world, and we want you know that the Players Association and the League are always available to help you figure out the most meaningful way to make that difference.”

More and more members of the NBA community have been sharing their thoughts about different social issues in the past few years. They have often used their social media accounts to let their fans and followers know about their stand on topics concerning the lives of many.

Just recently, the Golden State Warriors declined to visit the White House for the traditional courtesy call for winning the NBA championship, which shows their solid stand on President Donald Trump’s leadership.

Being vocal is not limited to endorsing a character or speaking against violence, as their popularity and the sport of basketball are platforms that can be used to raise awareness and educate the public about both social and economic issues. With the letters that were sent, it can be expected that more players, coaches, and even team owners will be more vocal in the future when making a stand.
