The San Antonio Spurs are still making moves to their roster before training camp, and they recently brought back a key piece on their bench to help back up Victor Wembanyama, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
“Free agent center Bismack Biyombo has agreed on a one-year deal to return to the San Antonio Spurs, sources tell ESPN. Spurs and Biyombo's agents at Wasserman reached a new contract for his 15th NBA season. Biyombo averaged 5.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in 28 games last season,” Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Biyombo joined the Spurs near the second half of last season and was solid in his minutes with the team. The Spurs now have a solid center rotation with him, Wembanyama, and Luke Kornet, and that's a frontcourt that could give some teams issues on certain nights.
This is Biyombo's seventh team since entering the league in 2011 after being drafted with the No. 7 pick by the Sacramento Kings. He has career averages of 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in 19.5 minutes per game.
There's no doubt that the Spurs have made it their goal to give Wembanyama some help, and their depth should prove to be pivotal this upcoming season as the team plans to improve from last year.
Injuries hurt the Spurs last season, as Wembanyama missed the entire second half of the season because of blood clots. Luckily, he was cleared to play over the summer, and he should be fully healthy coming back when this season starts. De'Aaron Fox is also another player who was injured late in the season, and he missed the last 18 games for the Spurs.
Those were the two top players for the Spurs, and this year, if they can stay healthy, they could find themselves in the playoff hunt in a competitive Western Conference. They added some depth over the offseason with two lottery picks in Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, and they should play a big hand in their success this season.
Not to mention, they have more young talent returning in Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Stephon Castle, which is a plus. It's uncertain what they'll be able to accomplish with such a young roster, but there's no doubt that they have the talent to surprise some people. As of now, this team could go as far as Wembanyama takes them, and if he can continue to ascend, things can get scary for the league.
