The Brooklyn Nets were this close to handing the New Orleans Pelicans their first loss of the season, and then they threw the game away, literally.

The Nets were up 115-108 with just about two minutes left in regulation. The Pelicans then went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one. Brooklyn point guard D'Angelo Russell then made a bonehead play.

Up three, the Nets elected to foul instead of letting the Pelicans shoot a three-pointer. After two makes from the line, New Orleans elected not to foul as the Nets moved the ball around. Russell turned the ball over on a pass intended for Caris LeVert with 7.5 seconds remaining. Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday took advantage of Russell's blunder by hitting a mid-range jumper with 2.0 seconds left to give New Orleans a one-point lead.

A technical foul after the basket sent Holiday back to the line, where he made the free throw for a two-point lead. Apparently, Brooklyn forward Ed Davis shoved somebody on the bench:

The Nets had one more chance to tie the game or win it with a 3-pointer, but Pelicans superstar power forward Anthony Davis used his long arms to prevent Brooklyn from even getting the ball inbounds:

The Pelicans are now 4-0 on the young season, while the Nets dropped to 2-3. Holiday scored 26 points for New Orleans. Davis had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

For the Nets, this is a tough loss. They had the game wrapped up and were going to give the Pelicans their first loss of the year. This should be a learning lesson moving forward for a young team.
