Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in pain after their brutal loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game, but he promises they'll be back better next year.
The Chiefs went up by as much as 18 points against the Bengals, but a second-half collapse where they scored just three points allowed Cincinnati to come back and win in overtime 27-24.
Mahomes knows they have no one to blame but themselves for blowing such a massive lead. However, all he wants to do now is deal with the pain and move on from it as they try to look forward to what's next.
“Love y’all #ChiefsKingdom. This one hurts but we will be back! See y’all next year!” Mahomes wrote on Twitter.
The 26-year-old QB has been largely criticized for his performance in the game. While he started off hot and scored two touchdowns in the first half, he suddenly went cold after halftime and never recovered.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has since take responsibility for their loss and Mahomes' struggles, noting that he could have done better in putting his quarterback in better positions to do what he usually does: make winning plays.
“I could have given him other things to work with,” Reid explained. “Better things. I could have given him better plays to work with.”
Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs were largely expected to make the Super Bowl and actually win it all after the other top dogs like the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost in the divisional round. With that said, it's only natural why the whole team and its fanbase were frustrated with the result.
But then again, as Mahomes said it, the game is over and all they can do now is look forward to next year.
