Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski has become a hot commodity on the open market as teams search for new offensive coordinators. Minnesota is considering promoting Stefanski to the position, but the New York Giants are also in the running.
According to Sporting News' Alex Marvez, Stefanski is the top candidate for the Giants' offensive coordinator job under new head coach Pat Shurmur. However, he's still under contract with the Vikings and will likely be promoted in Minnesota if the franchise is unable to hire Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo.
Shurmur, of course, was the offensive coordinator with the Vikings last season, and he's obviously built a strong rapport with Stefanski as he attempts to bring him to the Big Apple.
Either way, Stefanski will be an NFL offensive coordinator next season for the first time in his career at just 35 years of age. If he does return to the Vikings, it could be a bit awkward knowing he was their second choice behind DeFilippo.
The dominos will fall depending on whether the Indianapolis Colts hire Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their next head coach. If that happens, DeFilippo will likely be promoted in Philadelphia, leading to Stefanski staying in Minnesota. Former NFL running back Duce Staley would then become the favorite for the Giants' offensive coordinator job, according to Marvez.
Conversely, if Reich isn't hired by the Colts and stays in Philly, DeFilippo will likely land with the Vikings and allow Stefanski to join Shurmur in New York.
