It’s coming up to four months since Super Bowl LII, but the New England Patriots’ surprising decision to bench starting cornerback Malcolm Butler remains shrouded in mystery. Bill Belichick has predictably said nothing of note about that controversial decision, while Butler himself hasn’t shed much light on the subject as well.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady also didn’t offer much in the way of concrete details as to exactly why Butler was benched when he was asked about the topic recently. He revealed he didn't even know of Butler's benching until after the game, which is a bit of a surprise. However, he did say he wishes Butler was on the field and played during that big game.

“Well, I don't make those decisions. I wish he would've played, but the coach didn't play him and we still had a chance to win,” Brady said at the Milken Institute Global Conference, per Kevin Duffy of MassLive.com.

Brady explained why he didn’t really know what was happening as the offense and defense don’t interfere with one another. He wondered during the game why Butler wasn’t playing, but he didn't really realize the extent of the situation. He also said he didn’t discuss that decision to bench the team’s top corner with the coaches, and that it wasn’t something he would actually go and ask about.

No one truly knows if things would’ve been so much different had Brady's wish for Butler to play been granted. As Brady notes, the Patriots still had a shot to win the game even without Butler, so his absence may not have been that severe.

Still, there will be some people who won’t rest until they find out the real reason why the Patriots decided to bench Butler. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that information is coming out from anyone in Foxboro anytime in the near future.
