After an illustrious career for Montreal Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber, it appears it could be all over.
Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin revealed on Thursday that Weber is dealing with multiple injuries that could very well stop him from playing in the NHL ever again.
“I was amazed how he played,” Bergevin said, via NHL.com. “He was one of our top-minute defensemen throughout the whole playoffs all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. I personally wasn't aware [of the severity of his injuries], and from what I've gathered from the information, I don't think anybody on the Canadiens was really aware of it. I think we're all aware of their pain and what he was going through every day, but to that degree we didn't know.
“He won't be back next season, and probably won't be back for his career.”
Weber was a stud for the Canadiens in their heroic run to the Stanley Cup, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games. He racked up six points in the playoffs while playing all 22 games en route to their first appearance in the cup since 1993.
This is obviously a huge blow to Montreal, which is in jeopardy of losing their captain and best defenseman. Prior to joining the Canadiens in 2016 in the P.K. Subban trade, Weber played the first 11 seasons of his NHL career with the Nashville Predators. Injuries have been a common occurrence for the veteran though, missing 94 games across the last four seasons with the Canadiens.
Weber currently has five years remaining on a gigantic 14-year deal he signed with the Preds. If he does in fact retire before the contract expires, Nashville and Montreal would both be hit with salary cap recapture charges.
