Veteran shooting guard Wesley Matthews is now officially a member of the Indiana Pacers. With Matthews ultimately choosing Indiana upon recently becoming a free agent, the seasoned sharpshooter appears primed to play a large role for the Eastern Conference franchise going forward.

“That’s huge,” said Matthews, via J. Michael of the Indianapolis Star, of becoming a starter for the Pacers right off the bat. “That’s how I view myself and that’s how this organization views me. That’s big right there.”

The 32-year-old Matthews went on to appear in 46 games, while making 45 starts, split between the Dallas Mavericks and New York Knicks prior to being let go by the latter shortly after acquiring him from the former. Averaging 12.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game this season, Matthews was notably acquired by the Knicks in the same deal that saw superstar big man Kristaps Porzingis make his way to the Mavericks.

“We're excited to welcome Wesley to the Pacers,” said the team's president of basketball operations, Kevin Pritchard, when Indiana officially signed Matthews. “He's a solid professional who we feel strongly will help us the remainder of the season and into the playoffs. When we looked at possible players to bring in, he fit in well with what we are trying to accomplish here on the court, in the locker room and off the court.

As it stands today, the Victor Oladipo-less Pacers are 37-19 on the year, good for third place in the Eastern Conference standings. Oladipo unfortunately suffered a season-ending right knee injury back on January 23rd.
