The San Diego Padres are coming off a very underwhelming season where expectations were high. Injuries hurt their production though, especially on the mound. With that in mind, the team is certainly planning to make some moves this winter to bolster their staff. Per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Tribune, the Padres are planning to make a run at Marcus Stroman, who is coming off a tremendous year with the New York Mets.

The 30-year-old Stroman was arguably the ace of the NY rotation with Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard injured, posting a 3.02 ERA in a career-high 33 starts. He will likely be one of the most coveted arms this winter and even said recently that he’d be interested in a reunion with the Blue Jays.

Nevertheless, the Padres believe Stroman could be a valuable asset. In 2020, they added the likes of Yu Darvish, Mike Clevinger, and Blake Snell. Clevinger was essentially on the IL the entire season due to an elbow issue, while Darvish was frankly disappointing. Snell, the former AL Cy Young winner, struggled in the first half but showed serious promise after the All-Star Break, compiling a 3.24 ERA.

If the Padres can add Stroman to the mix, it could potentially be a very dominant rotation if this trio lives up to the billing. San Diego wants to win now and Stroman’s competitive spirit and bulldog mentality would fit perfectly in the clubhouse.
