The New England Patriots were able to sign Cam Newton and their expectations have increased exponentially. Greg Van Roten, who signed with the New York Jets and was a former teammate of Newton's, believes that Newton and Bill Belichick can be ‘terrifying' together.

During an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Van Roten discussed the prospects of Newton joining the Patriots:

“It's definitely terrifying to think if Cam Newton's healthy and he's in Belichick's offense, you know, in my division, it could be a long year for the other teams, because he's a game-changer,” Van Roten said. “He came into the league, you know, he's a league MVP, brought a team to the Super Bowl – he's just built differently than a lot of quarterbacks. And he's a headache to game plan for. So when he's healthy, you can stop the run from him, but then you gotta defend the pass. If you can stop the pass, well then you've got to account for the run. So, it's basically, pick one thing and he'll do the other. And then you couple him with Belichick, who only cares about winning and Cam really wants to prove himself, so it's definitely a recipe for disaster for the rest of the league if they can figure it out.”

In his final two seasons with the Panthers, Newton was unable to remain healthy. The three-time Pro Bowler missed a total of 16 games since 2018.

Of course, all eyes are on the Patriots as they prepare for life after Tom Brady. Following Brady's departure in free agency, it was assumed that New England's dynasty was coming to a close.

However, if Newton is healthy, then the Patriots could continue to wreak havoc in the AFC East in 2020. While Van Roten hopes to help the Jets turn things around, he realizes that Newton could make New England legitimate contenders next season.
