The New England Patriots trading safety Duron Harmon to the Detroit Lions shocked many, but Bill Belichick's explanation to Harmon about why gives a better insight on why the moves happened. Harmon joined his former teammates Jason McCourty on the Double Coverage podcast and he revealed that Belichick told him the move needed to happen so there would be more cap space open to make other moves during the offseason.

“[Belichick] told me, ‘Look, it's just at the point where we have to make some moves and we just paid Dev [Devin McCourty]; it’s just going to be really tough to really do anything, or get anything done in free agency if we don’t do this.'”

Belichick also told Harmon he thinks the Lions are a great spot for him, and that he should thrive in Detroit:

“He was just telling me it’s going to be a great opportunity for me (in Detroit) … I respect that because at the end of the day we know Bill is going to do what is best for the team and I respect that because not a lot of people can do that and have that commitment and dedication that the team is first.”

Harmon has one year left on his deal which makes the 2020 season even more important for him. With a big season, he has a chance to earn an extension from the Lions or could hit free agency and make some big money from another team. Who knows, maybe with some freed up cap space next offseason he could ultimately rejoin the Patriots.
