After three games with the New Orleans Pelicans, Isaiah Thomas’s 10-day contract has expired, leaving questions about whether or not his NBA comeback will continue. According to ESPN’s Andrew Lopez, the Pelicans are not planning to sign Thomas to a new deal right away. However, that doesn’t mean that his stint as a Pelican would be over, as the team can still bring him back to their lineup in the future.

The reason New Orleans is not in a hurry to sign the two-time All-Star is that they have two weeks before needing to sign another player to either another 10-day contract or for the rest of the season. And due to the luxury tax, the Pelicans may finish out the two weeks before adding a player to their roster.

But even if his future with them remains uncertain, the Pelicans reportedly loved Thomas’s veteran presence and communication with the team’s younger players. But New Orleans has been dealing with injuries to guards Josh Hart and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, which will factor in their decision over which player to sign.

In three games with New Orleans, Thomas averaged 7.7 points, 1.7 assists, and 1.3 rebounds while shooting 33% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc. The Pelicans currently have a 25-29 record and are in the 11th spot in the Western Conference behind the Golden State Warriors.

An experienced player like Thomas will be an important addition to a young team like the Pelicans. However, the team has also other needs in their backcourt that they need to address as they look to make a final push for the playoffs.
