The Pittsburgh Penguins almost always seem to play in some of the longest playoff games in the NHL. It happened once again, as the Penguins defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 in triple overtime, sending Rangers fans home in a sour mood. However, it might prove to be a pyrrhic victory for Pittsburgh.

With a few minutes remaining the second overtime, Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith removed himself from the game due to injury. NHL.com senior writer captured Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan addressing the injury.

DeSmith is considered day-to-day and is dealing with a lower-body injury. However, he was seen needing assistance to reach the locker room, so it certainly does not look good for Pittsburgh's goalie. He made an impressive 51 saves on 54 shots through the first four and a half periods before the injury.

After he left, third-string goalie Louie Domingue came in and stopped all 17 shots he faced. It's not yet known if DeSmith will be ready for Game 2. That could potentially be a serious issue because Penguins starting goalie, Tristan Jarry, has already been ruled out for at least the first two games of this series.

Jarry is dealing with a foot injury he sustained at the end of the regular season. Knowing the injury issues with Pittsburgh, winning this game was crucial. There is at least a little room to breathe now, having stolen home ice in Game 1.

The Penguins will look to take a commanding 2-0 series lead back at Madison Square Garden in Game 2 Thursday night.
