Zack Wheeler and the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a long-term contract extension, Buster Olney of ESPN reports. Wheeler was set to enter a contract year and free agency next offseason, but instead will remain in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. The deal is reportedly worth three years and $126 million, which gives Wheeler the highest annual salary for a contract extension ever, per Olney.

Wheeler, 33, could have waited until next offseason to sign his next deal. He has been one of the most consistent and reliable pitchers in the game over the past few years.

Wheeler finished sixth in National League Cy Young voting in 2023 after recording a 3.61 ERA and 1.078 WHIP across 192 innings pitched. He's been quite durable in recent seasons as well, even leading the league in innings pitched in 2021. Wheeler probably would have been the most coveted starting pitcher in free agency following the 2024 campaign, but he's now set to remain in Philadelphia.

Phillies set to compete for years to come

Rumors of a potential Wheeler extension emerged during this past offseason. Although, some questioned whether or not the veteran pitcher would be open to signing a new deal before his contract year.

Aaron Nola re-signed with the Phillies this past offseason. Bryce Harper and Trea Turner are among other Phillies stars who are under contract for a long time. In fact, Harper is reportedly interested in discussing another extension.

This Phillies ball club features a strong core of players. Philadelphia has done a terrific job of building a contender and they are now set to compete for years to come.

Of course, challenging the best teams in the National League, such as the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers, will still be a challenge. The Phillies have displayed the ability to compete with both teams in the playoffs, however.

Wheeler and Nola are both capable of leading the rotation in big games as well. They have both been willing to step up in the important moments and take care of business. Of course, Bryce Harper is one of baseball's best clutch hitters.
