Detroit Pistons star point guard Derrick Rose has undergone four knee surgeries in his career and yet he's still one of the best players in the league. Former NBA guard Stephon Marbury is one of the few people who isn't surprised.

Before the 2019-20 season was suspended due to COVID-19, Rose was the best player for the Pistons. The youngest MVP in NBA history was averaging 18.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 50 games for the Motor City team. Rose was also shooting 49.0 percent from the field, 30.6 percent from beyond the arc and 87.1 percent from the free-throw line.

During a recent interview with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Heavy, Marbury said Rose “looks like himself without the ultra-athleticism.”

“I mean, he looks like himself without the ultra-athleticism. But everything is intact. His short mid-range pull up, his floaters, his left hand and right hand, his speed to the basket, using his first step – getting guys to go lateral while he’s in the continuance of going forward with his herky-jerky moves…he’s just doing the things that he normally does,” Stephon Marbury said about Derrick Rose.

“I think he’s a lot more mature with his game, he has his style, he knows his style and he understands where he wants to go on the court.”

Rose is no longer jumping and dunking over people after four knee surgeries. The Pistons floor general is now relying on his mid-range game, floaters and layup package.

The Pistons had one of the worst records in the NBA prior to play getting suspended. Detroit could have traded Rose at the February trade deadline, especially since the Chicago native was in high demand.

However, the Pistons chose to keep Rose since the franchise wants to be competitive whenever the 2020-21 season starts. All-Star power forward Blake Griffin will be recovered from his knee injury by then, especially now since the NBA is on hiatus.

Rose, 31, has career NBA averages of 18.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists in 596 games with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Pistons. He signed a two-year deal with Detroit last summer.
