Houston Rockets guard Austin Rivers revealed that he also considered an offer to play for the Golden State Warriors for the rest of the 2018-19 NBA season.
Rivers signed with the Rockets in December after a brief stint with the Wizards. Before agreeing to a deal with the Rockets, he admitted that he was picking from at least three teams, and has control of his next destination. He wanted to play for a playoff team, and mentioned that Warriors was a possible destination in December.
“I had three or four teams to pick from that hadn't happened in years,” Rivers said via Alykhan Bijani of The Athletic when asked about his decision to sign with the Rockets. “So to be able to pick from playoff teams, that was the nicest thing. Golden State was in the mix.”
Rivers eventually selected the Rockets, who were in dire need for another guard in December when Chris Paul went down with an injury. He immediately made an impact, and earned a significant spot in the rotation of the Rockets. In 47 regular season games, the averaged 8.7 points on top of 2.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 28.6 minutes.
Rivers almost helped the Rockets secure a win against the Warriors in Game 1. He came off the bench and kept the Rockets in the game, finishing with 14 points. However, they fell short, 115-109, to go down 0-2 in the series. He then finished with eight points in Houston's 126-121 win over the Warriors in overtime on Saturday.
