It’s difficult to carve out true “breakout” candidates on a team whose top-end talent has all been established superstars for the better part of ten years. During Media day Kevin Durant poked fun at the idea that people were wondering if he’d even be able to play two summers ago, then anointing him <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kevin-durant-is-now-the-best-player-in-the-nba/" rel="noopener">the league’s best player</a> one summer later. We should know what KD brings to the table by now. His message was that nobody has to do much projecting or forecasting for him.</p><p>But the team isn’t especially young and doesn’t have piles of developmental minutes to go around either. Players like New York Knicks’ forward Julius Randle, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton, and Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant recently enjoyed breakouts, but their path was not blocked by true superstars. Furthermore, players like Randle and Sexton boasted lofty draft capital. The Nets don’t have say a Michael Porter Jr., a former lottery pick, they might reasonably expect to emerge as a star off their bench while vying for a title.</p><p>So who does that leave as our breakout candidate here?</p><p><b>Enter the Swiss Army Knife Bruce Brown</b></p><p>One thing we can be sure of here is that the Nets are light on tenacious defenders. They relied last season on players like Bruce Brown and Nic Claxton to come in and change a game defensively. When head coach Steve Nash looks at his squad and decides he wants to limit a big triple-threat wing like a Jimmy Butler, a Khris Middleton, or a Devin Booker, that’s when he’ll need to turn to a stalwart perimeter pitbull like Brown.</p><p>Last season, the 6-foot-4 guard from Massachusetts selected 42nd overall in the 2018 NBA Draft, averaged 8.8 points, 0.9 steals, 0.4 blocks, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. I’m not necessarily forecasting an offensive explosion in 2022, but I think Brown represents that jack-of-all-trades baller that Coach Nash is going to consider a luxury this year.</p><p>Nash had this to say, courtesy of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/28/sports/bruce-brown-nets.html" rel="noopener">Marie Schulte-Bockum, <i>New York Times:</i></a></p><blockquote>Nets coach Steve Nash told reporters earlier this month that Brown is “a solution for us. He’s a Swiss Army knife, so to speak. He can guard multiple positions. He does the dirty work.”</blockquote><p>That kind of high praise Brown generated last season will certainly not be forgotten. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/what-if-kyrie-irving-just-didnt-play-home-games-this-year-this-is-getting-weird/" rel="noopener">If the Nets happen to have a Kyrie Irving sized void in their lineup for home games, due to his vaccination status</a>, the door will open even further for Brown to earn some guard minutes.</p><p>ESPN’s <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/31428221/the-luke-walton-all-stars-10-players-starred-their-roles-2021" rel="noopener">Zach Lowe, described Brown’s game last season: </a></p><blockquote>“Brown was almost inventing a new position: “rover,” or “center fielder.”“It was really my only way to score,” he says. “The guy guarding me is trying to muck up the paint. Once I hit a few floaters, they gotta keep an eye on me.”None of this surprises Brown’s coaches at the University of Miami. “He’s a glue guy,” Jim Larranaga says. “He’s an amoeba. He changes form. He’s the best rebounding guard I’ve ever coached.”</blockquote><p>Last season Nash also said this, per Lowe’s piece: “Bruce plays his ass off. He defends on a team without a lot of guys like that. How do we keep him off the floor?”</p><p>The team asked Brown to defend stars and he impressed them. They asked him to learn to play some roll-man (since they didn’t have many options there) and he impressed them. In many ways, Brown is a coach’s dream. He’s a quick study, he plays with heart, and he doesn’t need a quota of isolations on offense fulfilled in order to stay upbeat. How indeed do you keep a guy like that off the floor?</p><p>There isn’t quite the same positional log jam, (which a young player like Nic Claxton may be facing) blocking Brown. While Claxton will have to compete for minutes with the likes of Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge, or Paul Millsap, Brown doesn’t have a ton of competition on the wing. At least not given what he does well.</p><p>Of course, the big three are there, but it doesn’t seem likely they’ll all be in the lineup every night. New arrival Patty Mills will certainly absorb a chunk of guard minutes for his shooting as will Jevon Carter for his on-ball defense, but Mills isn’t as willing to get grimy on the glass or on defense. Brown is an excellent rebounder for a guard, an area the Nets struggled with at times last season.</p><p>Patty Mills certainly hasn’t developed his short-roll game. That short-roll chemistry Brown was able to develop with James Harden and KD last season may be key here. And that gives him a leg up on a few newbies. He knows this system and won’t have any learning curve. It’s not impossible that Brown, just a career 29.8 percent 3 point shooter can improve from beyond the arc. <a href="https://www.nba.com/nets/news/feature/2021/08/09/bruce-brown-never-doubted-a-brooklyn-return" rel="noopener">Per NBA.com’s Tom Dowd:</a></p><blockquote>“In the two months that have passed since the end of the season, Brown said he’s been hard at work on his shooting, particularly from 3-point range, where he shot 28.8 percent last season.“Straight threes,” said Brown. “Catch and shoot threes. No mid-range. Leave that to KD and Kyrie.”</blockquote><p>If Brown can just crack 32 percent on wide-open triples, he’ll quickly make himself an indispensable member of the rotation. If he can crack 35 percent he’ll guarantee himself a playoff rotation spot and a big contract next summer. Brown is not someone who will always make you say “wow” when you read a box score. But he is the type of guy that makes his teammates and coaches say wow at a moment when you were looking down at your popcorn.</p><p>The synergies are all there. The team may suddenly need a guard to step in if Irving misses home games. They’re already lacking tough-minded defenders and rebounders. He’s one of a few players who can guard multiple positions so if they want to play a switch-heavy defense, they’ll need him on the floor. There are a lot of new faces so they may lack chemistry. That’s not an issue for Brown. Pretty much everything we might say is a weakness for Brooklyn (<i>e.g.</i> toughness on the interior, defense at the rim and on the wings, rebounding) Bruce Brown makes better. Plus there’s that outside chance he improves his jump shot enough to take another big step.</p><p>There are definite elements of “big man” in Brown’s game, despite his stature. I’m still not quite sure what position Brown plays. But something tells me that’s just how coach Nash likes it. If there are moments during the NBA Finals next spring where Brown impresses, just know he started laying the groundwork for that moment long before the season started by putting in the work and improving at everything the Nets have asked him to do.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Nets and Bruce Brown agreed to a one-year deal to bring him back alongside Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden, <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1422587807281958915?s=20">according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. </a></p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Restricted FA Bruce Brown Jr., is signing the one-year qualifying offer of $4.7M to return to the Brooklyn Nets, his agent Ty Sullivan of <a href="https://twitter.com/CAA_Basketball?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">@CAA_Basketball</a> tells ESPN. Brown can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Brown signed the qualifying offer and will be all set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2022, so another strong year could line him up for a big payday.</p><p>The Nets haven’t made any splashy moves in free agency, but they have retained Blake Griffin and now Bruce Brown while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-the-reason-spencer-dinwiddie-is-being-held-hostage-by-nets-in-free-agency/">losing</a> Spencer Dinwiddie to the Washington Wizards and Jeff Green to the Denver Nuggets.</p><p>While having little room to work with as far as cap space goes, Brown is back on a relatively cheap deal, and the Nets have another dangerous roster very capable of making another deep run– and this time reaching the ultimate goal of the NBA Finals.</p><p>Perhaps the Nets have another move up their sleeves, but for now, they are doing just fine at the start of NBA free agency.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But, the basketball gods had other plans and the Milwaukee Bucks ended up salvaging their season with a slim three-point win to help them cut down the series deficit, 2-1.</p><p>Brown missed a couple of makeable shots in the clutch which eventually gave the home squad a chance to take the lead and capitalize on the Nets’ errors. With key guys from the Bucks not wasting their opportunity, Milwaukee ended up on top leaving Brown and the rest of the Nets <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-twitter-goes-nuts-over-bruce-brown-ball-hogging-late-while-kd-kyrie-watch/">scratching their heads</a> thinking what could’ve been.</p><blockquote>“We had great looks, but just didn’t make them tonight,” Brown said after the tough 86-83 loss (via <a href="https://twitter.com/YESNetwork/status/1403182744373501953">YES Network</a>).</blockquote><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Bruce Brown recaps Game 3: "They made one more shot than we did. The Nets were up by one with 24 seconds left where Brown had a huge opportunity to bring them up by three. Kyrie Irving set Brown up perfectly after a pick-and-roll but Brown, unfortunately, missed a contested floater.</p><p>After Jrue Holiday made a go-ahead bucket on the other end, Brown and the Nets had another shot of icing the game. On their next possession, as they were down by one, Brown ended up with the ball after a botched inbound play. The swingman drove hard to the basket with eight seconds left and decided to take it strongly to the hoop on his own. Brown missed the Nets’ last two attempts, allowing the Milwaukee Bucks to escape with a pulsating 86-83 win.</p><p>Brown tried to take matters into his own hands by taking the last two shots of the Nets. This despite main man Kevin Durant heating up in the final minutes. They clearly had a golden chance to take a commanding 3-0 lead against the Bucks, but they executed horribly in their final few possessions. It’s safe to assume that Nash didn’t draw the final two plays for Brown, who got blasted on social media for his hero-ball attempts.</p><p>Credit, however, also goes to the tight defense of the Bucks, preventing Durant or Kyrie Irving, or even Joe Harris to get the ball and bail out the Nets. Hence, the 24-year-old Brown was forced to take the crucial shots.</p><p>For what it’s worth, Brown actually had a solid Game 3, finishing with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds in close to 38 minutes. He also bodied up Khris Middleton and Giannis Antetokounmpo. So one could argue he simply ran out of steam in the end.</p><p>Bruce Brown has definitely been a key cog for the Nets all season. While his late-game blunders were a bitter pill to swallow, his health <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/brooklyn-nets/schedule">moving forward</a> will be important for the squad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As a result, Bruce Brown became “the central character for the day” on Twitter, the one thing no human being wants to be.</p><p>Sorry, too late: Brown became the sole focus of NBA Twitter after a pair of late misses contributed to the Nets’ ugly 86-83 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 3 of their second round series. Brooklyn had a chance to land a kill shot. It failed, and now Milwaukee—down 2-1—has a chance to even the series in Game 4 on Sunday afternoon in Wisconsin.</p><p>The end of a razor-close NBA playoff game creates the expectation that the superstars will get the ball and ride or die on a defining shot attempt. Yes, Michael Jordan might pass the ball to Steve Kerr or John Paxson, and LeBron James might pass to Ray Allen or Kyrie Irving or Danny Green, but those guys just mentioned were elite players in either a starring or complementary role. Bruce Brown is not an elite role player. Yet he seemed to act like it late in the Nets’ loss on Thursday night.</p><p>Twitter, as you might expect, had a lot of fun with Brown’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/brooklyn-nets/news">takeover mode</a>, which didn’t take over anything other than the internet. Plenty of Brooklyn players were well below their best in Game 3 against the Bucks, and the irony is that Bruce Brown provided solid minutes. Brown was 8-of-17 from the field for 16 points, along with 11 rebounds and three assists.</p><p>Yet, great players are defined by how they perform in crunch time, and Brown’s failures—with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on the floor—are impossible to ignore. The Nets might still win the series (nearly everyone expects them to, probably in five games), but for the moment, Brooklyn has at least allowed Milwaukee to get up off the mat instead of landing a knockout punch.</p><p>If the Bucks do come back in this series, Nets fans and NBA watchers will remember that Bruce Brown made it possible. However, it will not be an easy task for the 6-foot-4, 200-pound Brown to guard the 6-foot-7, 284-pound Williamson.</p><p>In his second season in New Orleans, Zion Williamson’s stats are ridiculous at 26.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 62.5% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc. He may be the bigger and taller player, but that’s something that isn’t likely to stop Brown from going up against him.</p><p>In his first season with the Nets, Brown <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/bruce-brown/b0a309dd/stats" rel="noopener">is averaging</a> 8.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 54.9% from the field and 24.4% from downtown. Orlando, who also ended their own nine-game slide with the victory, was aided by the efficient <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/scores/nba/boxscore/brooklyn-nets-orlando-magic-3-20-2021/25ebc802-27bf-4a47-a62d-b9132d1748dc" rel="noopener">38 points</a> scored by forward Aaron Gordon.</p><p>Gordon, not well-known for his shooting as career 32.2 percent shooter from three, was on fire throughout and went 14-of-20 from the field and made a near perfect 7 -of-8 triples.</p><p>The apparent irony of Gordon’s performance was seemingly not lost on the Nets, particularly from forward Bruce Brown:</p><blockquote>“Teams got to be perfect to beat us and they were just hitting shots – tough shots. I’ve never seen Aaron Gordon hit shots like that in my life. So just a tough night,” Brown said  of the Magic  forward, per <a href="https://twitter.com/NYPost_Lewis/status/1373107703783043080" rel="noopener">Brian Lewis of the New York Post</a>.</blockquote><p>To Bruce Brown’s credit, Aaron Gordon had an uncharacteristically efficient scoring  night, as he has averaged just under 13.7 points per game before Friday’s showdown against the Nets.</p><p>Gordon wasn’t alone, however. Orlando’s starting shooting guard Evan Fournier continued to prove himself as one of the league’s most underrated scorers, torching Brooklyn for 31 points of his own on 10-of-13 shooting (6-of-8 from three). Two-time All-Star Nikola Vucevic also pitched in his due share, stuffing the stat sheet with 22 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.</p><p>The Nets, who are jostling with the Philadelphia 76ers for the top seed in the Eastern Conference, have struggled both inside and out on defense. Over the course of their six-game surge, they managed to relatively hold their opponents in check defensively, allowing their historically great offense to bludgeon opposing defenses into submission.</p><p>Not so here. The Magic are 13 games below .500, and this loss eerily echoes the Nets’ early season struggles, both defensively and waking up for apparently inferior competition.</p><p>As the favorites to win the NBA championship this year, the loss will ultimately mean little for the Nets’ record. But hey, at least I don't root for the Bears</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Even though it <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1328334749539184643">wasn’t the Woj Bomb</a> that Brooklyn Nets fans were hoping for (that could still come later), the Nets have made their first trade of the 2020 offseason, as they’ll be sending Dzanan Musa and a 2021 second-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for Bruce Brown.</p><p>The Nets are picking up a young guard with a bulldog mentality on defense and an offensive game that has grown leaps and bounds since Brown broke into the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bruce-browns-breakout-among-top-takeaways-from-summer-league-for-pistons/">NBA consciousness at Summer League in 2019</a>.</p><p>The appeal of Brown is not necessarily his upside. While he’ll never be a star, he should be a quality role player off the bench for Brooklyn, which is important for a team in need of good role players around the stars already in place.</p><p>Nets fans don’t have a clear picture of what their team will look like when the 2020-21 NBA season starts on Dec. 22, but with Brown, they are getting a defensive guard with a high floor who doesn’t break the bank contract wise. To make the money work for this deal, <a href="https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1328336709122224128">the Nets will be guaranteeing</a> the $1.66 million on Brown’s contract for 2020-21.</p><p>While Brown is by no means a lockdown defender, his effort and sharp instincts in passing lanes <a href="https://hoopshabit.com/2019/12/20/detroit-pistons-bruce-brown-defense-stifling/#:~:text=He%20averaged%204.3%20points%2C%202.5,for%20that%20was%20his%20defense.&amp;text=He%20is%20averaging%208.3%20points,games%2C%2024%20of%20them%20starts.">have made him a quality defender</a> over his first two seasons, giving the Nets another rotation guy they can throw at quality guards like Ben Simmons, Kyle Lowry and Goran Dragic in the playoffs.</p><p>From an offensive perspective, Brown <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brownbr01.html">boosted his numbers</a> from his first to second season with an improved 3-point stroke, as well as better vision when driving to the lane.</p><p>Additionally, Brown played with so much energy in short bursts in Detroit, getting a lot of offensive rebounds for a 6-foot-4 combo guard. He ranked fifth among point guards <a href="https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/player-stat/rebounds-offensive">in offensive rebounding in 2020</a>, averaging over one offensive rebound per game.</p><p>That effort to corral a missed shot could be crucial for the Nets, as giving superstars like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving a second chance on an offensive possession is yet another reason why the Nets should have one of the best offenses in the league this season. That offensive rebounding along with Brown’s ability to move without the ball will be crucial for a Nets team where the superstars should have the ball in their hands for the majority of offensive possessions.</p><p>This trade is a relative home run for Brooklyn, as Brown gives them a cheap rotation player who gives the flexibility to move on from heftier contracts like Spencer Dinwiddie and Caris LeVert in a potential James Harden trade. While those guys are obviously much better players than Brown, the former Detroit Piston makes the Nets feel much better about potentially parting with those talented guards in a bigger deal.</p><p>Brown gives Brooklyn a quality defender who isn’t afraid to do the dirty work on offense. If he can continue to make strides with his 3-point shot, there’s no reason why he can’t be a cheap 3-and-D guy who can be on the floor in crunch time for a star-studded Nets team.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Brown averaged 8.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 28.2 minutes per game for the Pistons last season. He started 43 out of 58 games for Detroit and is a stellar perimeter defender. He also improved his efficiency in a big way from his rookie season, shooting 44.3% overall and a respectable 34.4% on 3-pointers after struggling with his shooting in his first year.</p><p>The Pistons selected Brown with the 42nd pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of Miami. He had a non-guaranteed contract worth $1.7 million for the upcoming season, but the Nets <a href="https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1328336709122224128" rel="noopener noreferrer">will be guaranteeing his contract</a> in order to make this trade work. The 6-foot-4 guard will then be a restricted free agent in 2021.</p><p>As for Musa, he was the 29th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Unfortunately, he hasn’t found his footing in the NBA. The 6-foot-9 forward played just nine games in his rookie season and 40 games in Year 2 for Brooklyn. The 21-year-old averaged only 4.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 12.2 minutes per game. He shot just 37.2% from the field and 24.4% on 3-pointers.</p><p>The fresh start in Detroit could be good for Musa. The Pistons implanted the play on their minds and vowed to avenge themselves. Midway into the third quarter, they succeeded in this campaign as Bruce Brown and Christian Wood teamed up for an inbounds alley-oop of their own.</p><p>The Lakers defense didn’t see the play coming. JaVale McGee reacted but was too late. Christian Wood was already up in the air staring into the rim with Brown seemingly hopping in excitement that the play is virtually done. Besides, even if the Lakers center read the play in advance, it seemed that there was no way in hell that he was going to deflect that pass.
