The San Antonio Spurs are sending Davis Bertans to the Washington Wizards in a cap space-clearing move.

San Antonio agreed to terms with free agent wing DeMarre Carroll. However, to accommodate him and his new three-year, $21 million deal,  from the Brooklyn Nets, they needed to part ways with Bertans.

According to David Aldridge of The Athletic, the trade was part of a three-team deal. The Wizards will send the rights to Aaron White to Brooklyn, while the Nets move Carroll to the Spurs in an apparent sign-and-trade.

Bertans averaged 8.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 77 games for the Spurs last season. On paper, that's really not an impressive stat line. But the third-year veteran is a solid 3-point shooter, and that will be of great help to the Wizards.

Bertans will definitely have more opportunities in Washington, and he can certainly help that team contend for the playoffs. If he continues to improve on his 3-point shooting, he will be part of the team's long-term future.

The Wizards are a team that doesn't seem to have a clear direction at the moment. They are not good enough to contend for a championship, but they don't seem to be willing to go on a full rebuild. They are still hoping that Bradley Beal and John Wall, assuming he's healthy, can do something special for this team.

A lot of things can happen in a year though, and the Wizards still have time to determine what direction will they want to take.
