Kawhi Leonard announced he's near a return today and dispelled any rumors of a conflict with the San Antonio Spurs, even expressing his desire to retire with this organization.
While the 26-year-old remained noncommittal to a return date, he said he should return “soon,” but according to ESPN's Michael C. Wright, Leonard is “close” to coming back, doing some “insane” workouts to get back into action.
Leonard has yet to get incorporated with the rest of the team, working out with the staff for the time being. But if Wright's sources are onto something, Leonard is tackling this rehabilitation aggressively in hopes to help this team navigate a challenging schedule.
The Spurs are in danger of falling off the cliff, sliding to the sixth position in the West, after the Portland Trail Blazers and the New Orleans Pelicans have streaked at the right time, winning eight and nine consecutive games to take third and fourth place in the conference, respectively.
LaMarcus Aldridge has made the most of his opportunities, a large reason why the Spurs have been able to hold down the fort for such a long time, as Leonard has only played in nine games this season. During that short stint, Leonard averaged 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 rebounds per game — still a shadow of his former self, getting shut down indefinitely by the front office.
San Antonio will need Leonard to get up to gear and progress quickly if they are to makes some waves in the postseason.
