Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney said that it is likely general manager Kevin Colbert will return in 2020, according to Gerry Dulac of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“I'm optimistic about Kevin being back next year,” said Rooney. “We have to get something done. The sooner, the better.”

Colbert has been a member of the Steelers' organization since 2000, first serving as director of football operations through 2010. He was then promoted to general manager, and in 2016, he also took on the title of vice president.

Pittsburgh has experienced a great deal of success throughout Colbert's tenure as general manager, making six playoff appearances and winning four AFC North division titles. The Steelers also made it to the Super Bowl during the 2010-11 campaign, where they fell to the Green Bay Packers.

The last couple of years have been rough, as Pittsburgh has failed to qualify for the playoffs in back-to-back seasons, but it went a respectable 9-6-1 in 2018 and went 8-8 this past season in spite of heavy injury issues up and down the roster.

Colbert signed a two-year contract extension with the club back in the summer of 2017, which was enough to make sure he was around through the 2020 NFL Draft.

However, Colbert did not sign another extension last year, so he and Rooney will have to come to terms on a new deal to ensure that he remains with the Steelers for the long haul.

Prior to joining Pittsburgh's organization 20 years ago, Colbert served as a scout for the Miami Dolphins from 1985 through 1989 and as the Detroit Lions' pro scouting director from 1990 through 1999.
