During the Week 1 action between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns that wound up being a 21-21 tie, second-year defensive end Myles Garrett was called for roughing the passer call on his tackle on Pro Bowl quarterback Ben Roethlisberger after he threw the ball.

Since then, Roethlisberger has voiced that he doesn't believe a penalty was warranted on that play for what Garrett had done, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

“I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it,” Roethlisberger said of Garrett’s hit. “I wasn’t upset about it. I was surprised that they [penalized Garrett] but I wasn’t gonna go crazy about it. It just — I don’t understand, why’s the NFL have to come out and say that? They sure as heck didn’t come out and say that the ball did hit the guy in the head on the punt. Do they have to come out and every call that they make wrong in games, do they come out and say it? So I don’t understand why [on] that play particularly they had to come out and say they were wrong. They review plays, and I thought the point of reviewing plays was to get it right. That ball hit that guy’s helmet on that punt. It was crazy.”

It was a quick play that saw Garrett tackle Roethlisberger just mere seconds after he threw the ball down the field. It was a clean hit that didn't have any ill will behind it but rather that the Browns defensive end was just a fraction of a second late on getting to the quarterback.

What may have gotten him penalized was the fact that he laid his body forward on Roethlisberger that sent him to the ground. The rules specify that he must go off to the side rather than fall down on him to prevent any injury from occurring on the play.

This is something that will always be penalized in favor of the safety of the quarterback as it was a late hit by the letter of the rule that in place. If anything, this shows that there are no harsh feelings from Roethlisberger toward Garrett for the hit.
