Minkah Fitzpatrick thrived in his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019 as he patrolled the field at free safety. While Fitzpatrick would prefer to be moved around, the Steelers revealed their plan for him in 2020.

During a conference call, the Steelers' defensive backs coach, Tom Bradley, shared how Pittsburgh wants to utilize Fitzpatrick this season.

“We do move him around,” Bradley said, via Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Formations are going to dictate a lot of different things we do with him. One of the things you always try to do in football is get your guys in the position that they do their best things. One of the things he does where he is really good is playing center field and being around the ball and doing all those things. We do have the capability to move him and put him in different spots. A lot of times formations will dictate that — motions, adjustments. But we would like to keep him in center field.”

When Fitzpatrick was traded to the Steelers from the Miami Dolphins early in the 2019 season, he criticized Miami for how they used him. Contrary to what he did with the Dolphins, Fitzpatrick found himself roaming at free safety for the Steelers.

Fitzpatrick would notch five interceptions in his first seven games with Pittsburgh, helping the Steelers become one of the best defensive units in the NFL. However, he would fail to record another interception for the rest of the season.

As a result, Fitzpatrick iterated earlier this offseason that he doesn't want to see a drop-off in his play due to being secured to one position. Despite his request, the Steelers seem keen on keeping Fitzpatrick at free safety to create plays for the defense.
