Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt has done everything imaginable to deserve a big payday. However, he still hasn't received one. The pass-rusher made the decision to attend practice on Wednesday though ahead of the Steelers' Week 1 matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday as the contract negotiations continue.
QB Ben Roethlisberger gave his brutally honest take on the situation on Wednesday as well, making it crystal clear the Steelers need to front up and give Watt a new deal:
“I’ve been through a few negotiations here with contracts. One of the reasons I took less money was for guys like him to get paid, and he needs to get paid. He deserves every penny he wants and asks for. T.J. Watt is that guy, that should get whatever he wants.”
Watt is in the final year of his rookie deal, which is set to pay him $10 million. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin voiced earlier this week that he expects his defensive star to play this weekend despite the stall in contract talks, but you'd have to believe that T.J. Watt is getting frustrated. After all, he's a back-to-back All-Pro and has been the runner-up for Defensive Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons. Watt also led the league in 2020 with 15 sacks.
Needless to say, the Pittsburgh Steelers have absolutely no excuse but to reward Watt.
