The Pittsburgh Steelers have their backs against the wall after yet another loss in Week 3. The Steelers pulled off an upset win in Week 1 over the Buffalo Bills on the road but they have since dropped back-to-back games to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Cincinnati Bengals, both at home. The offense hasn't been right of late for the Steelers, in part because Ben Roethlisberger is a limited quarterback at this point of his career and also because the team is dealing with key injuries on their offense.

Diontae Johnson missed the Cincinnati game with an ankle injury, while JuJu Smith-Schuster was not able to finish that contest due to a rib issue. With the Steelers top two wide receivers hurting, now seems to be a great time for another Steeler playmaker to step up, and one player not a lot of people are even aware of could be on the verge of breaking out, and that's no other than rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth.

Freiermuth, who was taken by the Steelers in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft as the 55th selection overall is slowly carving out a role in Pittsburgh's passing attack that has so far underwhelmed. Pittsburgh is second in the NFL with a 74.4 pass play percentage but is only 13th in passing yards per game (255.3) and 24th in pass completion percentage (63.85). But if all Steelers receivers had the hands of Freiermuth, things could have been a whole lot different for Pittsburgh's attack.

Freiermuth has been targeted 10 times across three games and has caught eight of them for 82 yards and a touchdown. The sample size might be small, but you can make an argument already that he deserves to be a priority for Big Ben over current TE1 Eric Ebron. That's probably starting to happen, though. For one, Freiermuth now has more targets than Ebron, 19-7. Ebron also failed to haul down any of the three targets that came his way in the Bengals game. Moreover, Freiermuth is tied with Johnson for most red-zone looks among Steelers players.

It's still early to tell what kind of season Freiermuth is ultimately going to have in his rookie year in the NFL, but don't be surprised if he goes off one of these weeks and sustains that form for the rest of the season.
