The Minnesota Vikings had a pretty busy draft in gathering offensive linemen.

In fact, they used three picks on the position (two offensive tackles and one offensive guard).

The Vikings drafted offensive tackle Ezra Cleveland in the second round, offensive tackle Blake Brandel in the sixth round and offensive guard Kyle Hinton in the seventh round.

Meanwhile, they are returning four of their five starters on the offensive line from last season (tackles Riley Reiff and Brian O'Neill, center Garrett Bradbury and left guard Patrick Elfein).

That means the right guard spot has yet to be filled. According to Jack White of Vikingswire.com, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman says it's an open race.

“The coaches will figure out who’s our best five,” Spielman told the Star Tribune Saturday. “We’re excited about [Garrett] Bradbury, [Brian] O’Neill and Riley Reiff holding down the fort on the left side until we see what we have, but it’s going to be a wide-open competition at the interior spots — the two guard spots.”

Not only is the right guard spot open, but the left guard spot is as well. It sounds like Elfein doesn't have the job secured yet. It would stand to reason that he's probably in the lead for the left guard spot.

Meanwhile, the Vikings have a lot of competition for the right guard spot. That includes Cleveland and Brandel, even though they were both drafted as tackles.

We've seen it plenty of times before. A player is drafted and shifted inside on the line. With the Vikings already content with their tackles, it would stand to reason that they would be open to trying the same thing with Cleveland and Brandel.

There's still time before the season starts. With that in mind, there will be a chance for the Vikings to get to prove themselves.

However, with so many options, their job might not be that secure. That's good news for the Vikings. More options and depth means they always have an alternative.

Still each Vikings player will want to make their mark early and try to win a starting spot from the very beginning.
