Since the end of the 2017 season, there had been the assumption that former league MVP quarterback Drew Brees would work out a new deal to remain with the New Orleans Saints over the remainder of his NFL career. However, there has been a lack of progress made toward working out a new deal ahead of the start of the free agency period.

This has now put Brees in the position to possibly field calls from other teams as teams can speak to his agent now that the “legal tampering period” is in place until free agency begins on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. According to Tom Pelissero of The NFL Network, the Minnesota Vikings have already placed a call to the 39-year-old.

The Minnesota Vikings are in need of addressing their quarterback situation with each of their options at the position last year heading to the free-agent market. What is interesting about this is that the Vikings have been rumored over the last few weeks as being possibly the top landing spot for Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins. In fact, there was chatter of there being mutual interest between both sides to get a deal done.

Minnesota has plenty to offer with a balanced team on both sides of the ball with arguably the best defense in the league and a high-powered offense that helped them reach the NFC Championship game for the first time in eight years. This may largely be a reason for the strong interest from Cousins and could potentially sway Brees to consider if the contract situation in New Orleans doesn't work out.

This could have a tremendous impact on how things play out for Cousins if the Vikings were to somehow able to pry Brees away from the Saints. It would open the door for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals to step in to land the 29-year-old.

At the same time, Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network is reporting that other quarterback-needy teams have reached out to Brees' agent on Monday.

With the free agency period looming, this pushes more pressure upon the Saints to get a new deal worked out for Brees in the next couple of days.
