The Golden State Warriors have agreed to terms on a two-way contract with second-round pick Nico Mannion, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Mannion will have the opportunity to play some games with the Dubs as well as spend time with the team's G League affiliate.
Mannion was one of a number of points guards whose value was fairly uncertain heading into the draft. Some talent evaluators tabbed the former Arizona point guard to go in the first round.
Mannion showed flashes of his playmaking capabilities with the Wildcats, averaging 14.0 points, 5.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 32 games. He did struggle to score the ball efficiently, shooting less than 40 percent from the field and just over 32 percent from beyond the arc. However, Mannion's athleticism and high basketball IQ seemingly made him a top guard prospect.
But the former Phoenix native slipped to the back half of the second round, where the Warriors made the fairly obvious choice to snatch him up.
Golden State is obviously set at the point guard spot, with a healthy Stephen Curry ready to resume his duties as the leader of the team.
But the Warriors lacked depth when Curry was sidelined due to injury last year. Jordan Poole struggled in his rookie campaign, and Ky Bowman just signed with the Clippers. Not to mention, Klay Thompson's unfortunate injury leaves another void to be filled.
Mannion figures to have every opportunity to compete for a roster spot. He will have to improve his shooting, but his playmaking and general awareness could eventually help him be a steady NBA player.
