The Golden State Warriors are in a dog fight with the Boston Celtics Wednesday night. Midway through the second quarter with the Warriors trailing 33-25, Stephen Curry and Marcus Smart were going after a loose ball. Smart appeared to roll up on Curry's ankle, which would force him to leave the game.
The play continued, with the Warriors in transition. On the other end of the floor, Klay Thompson goes up for a layup and Smart is there once again. Smart left his feet early and upon coming down, made contact near Thompson's head, drawing a flagrant foul. Meanwhile, Curry headed to the locker room.
During halftime, NBC Sports Bay Area reporter Dalton Johnson reported that Curry will not return to the game due to what's being called left foot soreness.
The Warriors superstar guard will finish the night with three points on 1-4 shooting from the floor. Boston has since built a commanding lead.
Smart has long been known as one of the best defenders in the league, especially guarding on the ball. He is also known for his physical style of play, particularly on the defensive end. Prior to Wednesday's game, ironically Smart happened to detail just how difficult it is to guard Curry to reporters.
Smart acknowledged that it takes a lot of great cardio to be able to stay with Curry. He does so much moving off the ball, but nevertheless, Smart likes the challenge.
“If you aren’t ready for a battle, don’t step in the gym. You know he’s going to make you work and run all over the floor,” Smart said.
Smart and the Celtics clearly came ready to play Wednesday night.
