The Golden State Warriors look poised to compete for a title this season. It's a virtual re-do from last season, when they looked ready to do the same. They nearly had a championship-caliber center join their cause too.

3-time All-Star Marc Gasol was reportedly ready to join Golden State last season, according to Warriors reporter for The Athletic Anthony Slater.

Gasol nearly signed with the Warriors last summer — and might have done so had Thompson not ruptured his Achilles before free agency. It may never materialize, but he has the exact passing acumen and center skill set that has traditionally fit Kerr’s offense best, similar to David West and Andrew Bogut.

With the team playing Kevon Looney and rookie James Wiseman at the five spot, adding a proven winner in Gasol could have been huge even in his advanced age. But the door is still open for Gasol to join the Dubs.

Marc Gasol is a name to watch. He just wiggled his way away from the Lakers and, according to an ESPN report, plans to remain in Spain while sorting out the next (and perhaps last) phase of his playing career.

Warriors fans surely hope James Wiseman takes the leap and holds firm on the center spot as the season goes on. But if he's not ready and the Warriors look good otherwise, Marc Gasol could be an option.
