After Channing Tatum teased 23 Jump Street as the “best” threequel script he has read, writer Rodney Rothman took to X to unveil the scrapped title of the movie if it had happened — and it confirmed the long-rumored Men in Black crossover.

In a post on X, Rothman, who wrote 22 Jump Street, weighed in on the rumors. He quote-posted on Discussing Film's post about Tatum's tease. The first page of the screenplay reveals the title to be 23 Jump Street: Men in Black 4

“Still a long shot, but nothing is impossible,” the caption read. “Wanna see the rest?”

Fan reactions

Fans weighed in on the matter. There is an overall consensus that they want to see more of the scrapped script. “I would go to great lengths for this one,” one X user said.

“This would be the greatest movie of all time,” another weighed in.

It is unclear if this will lead to anything. As Rothman noted, 23 Jump Street seeing the light of day is a stretch. But perhaps this will start a “Snyder Cut”-like movement.

After all, from the sound of Tatum's comments, Jonah Hill, his co-star, seems game to return. They would just need to get Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith back into the fold from the Men in Black series.

Rodney Rothman got his start as a writer and producer of the Late Show with David Letterman. He also served as the writer of Undeclared, Game Over, Committed, and Help Me Help You.

His first movie script was for Grudge Match. Rothman followed that up with 22 Jump Street, taking over for 21 Jump Street writer Michael Bacall.

Additionally, he collaborated with Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for the Spider-Verse franchise. Rothman co-wrote the first movie in the series and co-directed it as well.

Will 23 Jump Street ever happen?

It would be surprising if the proposed 23 Jump Street-Men in Black 4 crossover would happen. It is more likely that one or both happen as individual projects.

The Men in Black series commenced in 1997 with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith starring in it. They returned for two sequels in 2002 and 2012, respectively. However, instead of a proper fourth movie with them at the helm, the series featured a new cast in its fourth movie.

Men in Black: International was released on June 14, 2019. It featured Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who star in the MCU's Thor series together, in the lead roles. Kumail Nanjiani, Rebecca Ferguson, Rafe Spall, and Liam Neeson also star in the movie. While Jones and Smith did not return, Emma Thompson and Tim Blaney reprised their roles from the previous movies.

The Jump Street franchise was rebooted in 2012 with the Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill-led movie. It was a new adaptation of the TV series of the same name and followed two police officers who went undercover as high school students. In the sequel, they go undercover at a college.

Both Jump Street movies were hits. The first movie made over $200 million on a $42 million budget. Its sequel made over $330 million on a $50 million budget.

If 23 Jump Street is going to happen, it will have to come soon. Tatum and Hill are unlikely to be able to pull off being students nowadays. Perhaps a sci-fi twist such as incorporating the Men in Black series is the way to go.
