The Dallas Mavericks made a great trade when they moved up in the 2018 NBA draft to select guard Luka Doncic. The Mavs made this deal by trading up to the 3rd pick from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the 5th pick and a protected first round pick.

The Mavs obviously went on to take Doncic while the Hawks took Trae Young and Cam Reddish with the protected pick. This trade was vital for the Mavericks and it has put themselves in a winning position.

Trading for Doncic completely altered the future of the franchise. He is a complete game changer and is already one of the best players in the league. Although they gave up good value to get him, Doncic was completely worth acquiring for the Mavs.

3. The Mavs didn't give up too much

The Mavericks were able to trade for the pick to select Doncic but not giving up too much. Although the Mavs gave up picks that turned into star Trae Young and a young player in Cam Reddish, it was still a great trade for the Mavericks.

Doncic is a generational talent and a superstar which is more valuable compared to Young and Reddish. He has proved his worth especially in the playoffs as he is able to elevate his team above where it should be.

Doncic was well worth the selection and the Mavs got him for a good price.

2. Doncic was a perfect replacement for Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk Nowitzki is no doubt the greatest Mavs player of all time, but his career was coming to an end. Nowitzki and Doncic were both European players and transitioned to the NBA level. Doncic was the perfect transition from the Nowitzki era as he fits the same mold of a player that can get the fans excited. While his game is different compared to Nowitzki's, his story is similar, which is intriguing for fans to follow.

Doncic has proven himself to be a great player in his young career and could eventually pass Nowitzki as the greatest Mavs player of all time.

1. The Mavs needed a star

The Mavs needed to get a star and Doncic had the talent to become one. Although he was not rated as the top player in the draft by many people, Doncic has turned out to be the best in the draft. Many saw the potential in him, but the Mavericks were the team willing to trade up and take a chance on him. He has given them everything they wanted and more and will continue to improve as a player.

Doncic is only 22 years old and is regarded as one of the best players in the league. He is able to dominate in almost all aspects in the game as he gets near triple double numbers almost every game. This season Doncic averaged 27.7 points, 8 rebounds, and 8.6 assists while improving his shooting efficiency. The Mavericks needed a star after Nowitzki and Doncic filled that void completely.

It is obvious the Mavs will never regret making this trade for Doncic. While Trae Young became a star and Cam Reddish has made for a solid role player, Doncic has become a top player in the league. The trade worked out for both teams but the Mavericks got the better end of it.

Look for the Doncic-led Mavs to be a contender for years to come.
