Adam Wainwright has had quite a run with the St. Louis Cardinals. From playing an instrumental role in the Cardinals' 2006 World Series-winning run to the multitude of team records that he currently holds, he sure has established his place in being among the more formidable starting pitchers in franchise history.

Overall, Wainwright has been a part of one of the more successful eras in Cardinals team history. He has featured in a pair of World Series runs in his tenure with the NL Central powerhouse and has only missed the playoffs in just six seasons.

As Wainwright opened up about to MLB.com, being involved in this era in Cardinals team history is a feat that he much cherishes when he reminisces on his career.

“Just being part of one of the best eras in Cardinals baseball is a big deal,” Wainwright said. “We’ve had a pretty good run of playoff teams, World Series teams, championship teams for a long time. Most of the years I’ve been here, we had a chance to win.

“That’s all you can ask for. Being on a winning team, that's just as much as you can ask for.”

Although there was much outside chatter that he would opt to retire at the conclusion of the 2021 season, Wainwright elected to sign a one-year deal with the Cardinals for the 2022 campaign. Since then, speculation has ramped up on whether he will decide to call it a career later this year. He did note earlier in the year that the ongoing season is “almost certainly” going to be the last one of his run in the majors.

When also asked on just how much he has left in the tank at this stage in his career, the veteran Cardinals pitcher noted that he simply wants to “enjoy” where he is currently at.

“I have no idea,” Wainwright said. “I might have one start left. I might have 20 starts left. I try not to think about it. I stay in the present. I might have 50 starts. I’m not sure. What I try to do is stay where I’m at because every time I look forward too far and start planning for the future, I have a setback.

“I just live where I am. … Don’t get too far into the future. Just enjoy where I am.”

Wainwright has posted a 3.12 ERA through nine starts so far in the 2022 campaign.
