3 sneaky Astros 2022 MLB trade deadline targets
Houston's main strength is their pitching. But they would benefit from some offensive upgrades. And sure, players such as Juan Soto, Andrew Benintendi, and Bryan Reynolds are intriguing options. But the following players are going to be under the radar options.
Brandon Drury, Reds
Brandon Drury built an All-Star case for himself this season. Despite not making the All-Star game, he has enjoyed a productive year in Cincinnati with the Reds.
But his greatest asset is his versatility. The Astros should acquire him because they have dealt with a number of injuries. Both Jose Altuve and Jeremy Pena have faced IL time this season. Outfielder Michael Brantley is currently dealing with an injury.
Acquiring Drury would provide a quality replacement should the team endure any further injuries. Additionally, Drury could simply provide extra rest for players given his ability to slot in at most positions.
Drury would be a low-risk, high-reward option for the Astros.
David Peralta, Diamondbacks
David Peralta isn't tearing the cover off of the baseball by any means. But he is a veteran hitter who is proven in the big leagues. And Houston would benefit from the outfield depth.
At this point in his career, acquiring Peralta would not cost too much. And he can slot in anywhere in the outfield. He could even come off the bench as a quality fourth outfield option. The Astros' current centerfield options are Jake Meyers and Chas McCormick.
The Astros could either place Peralta in center or move Kyle Tucker over to center field. But trading for Peralta would benefit the lineup without question.
Ramon Laureano, Athletics
The Athletics are in the midst of a complete rebuild. Most of the trade buzz for Oakland has been dominated by Frankie Montas and Sean Murphy. But Laureano is a solid trade chip as well.
Laureano has displayed hitting prowess in the past. His numbers have not been terrific this season, but that means he will come at a discount. He also profiles as a centerfielder and features one of the best throwing arms in baseball.
His offense would be an upgrade at the position and the defense is just a bonus. Adding Laureano would strengthen this Houston ball club as they set their sights on winning the 2022 World Series.
Final thoughts
The Astros are one of the best teams in baseball. But making just a couple of moves to complete their roster will be pivotal for the postseason. If the Astros can add a proven outfielder, this team will be even more dangerous come playoff time.
