The Colorado Avalanche have slayed the beast. They have beaten the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning to win the Cup. The Avalanche defeated the Lightning in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, 2-1. They did so in very impressive fashion. After falling behind 1-0 early in the first period, the Avs turned stepped up their game.

In doing so, they made some remarkable history.

It was Colorado's 10th comeback victory in these playoffs. That tied the 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins for the most in Stanley Cup playoff history.

But what the Avalanche accomplished in this particular game was so incredibly impressive. The Lightning were looking to claim the title of a dynasty, trying to win their third title in a row.

The Avalanche are known for their high-flying offense, and for good reason. But after scoring two goals in the second period to take the lead, it was their defense that took over the game. Avalanche goalie Darcy Kuemper only faced four shots in the third period. The first shot was not allowed until more than 10 minutes of game time had occurred.

Colorado used their speed and agility to maintain possession. They did an excellent job on the forecheck and completely took Tampa Bay out of their game offensively.

It is the third championship in Avalanche history and their first since 2001 when they defeated the New Jersey Devils in seven games. They also swept the Florida Panthers in 1996 for their first Cup victory. Colorado coach Jared Bednar was questioned whether he was capable of leading a team to a title. Well, that was answered on Sunday night.

The Colorado Avalanche are your 2021-2022 Stanley Cup champions.
