Cale Makar injury status vs. Hawks

Cale Makar will not be in the Avs' lineup when they welcome the lowly Hawks to Ball Arena on Monday, as the 24-year-old is day-to-day with a lower body injury.

“He's out. Tweaked something in the Detroit game [on Saturday]. Felt good after. Yesterday, sore. Sore again today,” head coach Jared Bednar said, according to NHL.com. “Not going to risk it and have it drag on.”

It's disappointing news for Colorado fans, as the team is really starting to heat up with the postseason just around the corner. Makar leads the NHL averaging 26:36 in ice time per game. He's third in scoring on the Avalanche with 61 points in just 55 games, and second on the team with 45 assists.

It's been a challenging health year to say the least for the reigning Norris and Conn Smythe Trophy winner; he missed several games in January with a lower-body injury, and had two different stints in the NHL's concussion protocol throughout February.

“He doesn’t feel great. He doesn’t feel bad. But just where the game was at, no need to put him out,” Bednar said after Makar left in the third period of Saturday's 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Avalanche fans will be hoping that Makar's injury is a minor one and he can return this week, but as to the question of is Cale Makar playing vs. the Blackhawks, the answer is no.
