Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has been officially named as the backup to starter, Mike Glennon. That was after Bears head coach John Fox declared Trubisky as the clear No. 2 behind Glennon per a report by Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

After spending the preseason as the team's designated No. 3 quarterback, coach John Fox announced Wednesday the rookie finally overtook Mark Sanchez for the backup gig.

Trubisky’s ascent to the backup role is Fox’s way of rewarding the North Carolina product for an impressive preseason showing in which the second-overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft went 36 of 53 on his passing attempts for 364 yards and three touchdowns without an interception across four games. He has been particularly great in his preseason debut, albeit in a 24-17 loss to the Denver Broncos, wherein he completed 18 of 25 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.

It doesn’t look like Trubisky’s promotion would end here, as he’s on the right path towards eventually supplanting Glennon for the starting gig. Of course, that depends on how well the rookie will progress and how good Glennon is going to be in the upcoming regular season.

Chicago isn’t expected to be a serious contender for the Super Bowl anytime soon, but its quarterback situation is one reason to keep the Bears interesting to watch.
