Mitch Trubisky is no longer in Windy City, but his past with the Chicago Bears could have a significant impact on how the team handles rookie quarterback Justin Fields at least during the 2021 NFL preseason season. For Adam Hoge of NBC Chicago, Bears head coach Matt Nagy, who decided not to play Trubisky in the 2019 NFL preseason, might not be too interested in applying the same plan on the rookie out of Ohio State.

So where does Fields fall on the rep scale? Well, you better believe that some of Nagy’s regret of the 2019 season came from the obvious observation that Mitchell Trubisky could have used those reps. Would they have changed the trajectory of his career in Chicago? Probably not, but they still would have helped him during that season, which was a step backward.

Without any preseason warmup ahead of the 2019 season, Trubisky, who’s now with the Buffalo Bills, went on to have his worst year since arguably his rookie season. He finished the 2019 campaign with 17 passing touchdowns against 10 interceptions and a 63.2 completion percentage.

The expectation for the Bears this coming 2021 NFL regular season is that they will have Andy Dalton under center. Until when they will have the veteran starting for them is another question, which is mostly dependent on Chicago’s confidence in Fields to take over.
