The Chicago Bears have claimed Mitchell Trubisky is still their starting quarterback for 2020, but if the team is smart they would bring in Andy Dalton as an upgrade over Trubisky. According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, the Bears have already had talks with the Cincinnati Bengals about bringing in Dalton.

Bears general manager Ryan Pace also said at the NFL Scouting Combine that the team is looking at bringing in a veteran quarterback to push Trubisky:

“We believe in [Trubisky], we support him and we’re going to be better around him,” Pace said. “But I think competition brings out the best in everybody.”

Dalton is a guy the Bears need to bring in, but not just to push Trubisky but take over as the starting quarterback altogether. While it would take draft compensation to get Dalton, Chicago needs to get a better quarterback to take advantage of its elite defense.

Pros of Dalton

Andy Dalton has received a lot of heat for his play with the Bengals the last few years, but how much of that has really been his fault?

The Bengals had low expectations heading into the 2019 season, and they lived right down to those expectations. Even though the team didn't have a lot of success, Dalton played decent, especially toward the end of the season.

Dalton started 13 games for the Bengals, throwing for 3,494 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. The interceptions have always been one of the knocks on Dalton's game, but at least he is willing to take chances.

Dalton also had a lack of playmakers this season in Cincinnati. That wasn't all the Bengals' fault, with A.J. Green not being able to play because of injury.

Dalton was also in a weird spot because it didn't seem like the team really ever wanted him, and that can't be good for a player's confidence.

Cons of Trubisky

Mitchell Trubisky has made it clear that he shouldn't be the long-term starting quarterback in Chicago. Trubisky took a major step back in 2019, struggling with his accuracy, decision-making and ability to make big plays down the field.

Trubisky only managed 17 touchdowns to 10 interceptions and a mediocre-at-best quarterback rating of 83.0. He didn't take enough chances and often airmailed the deep throws he did make.

Dalton might not be a 10-year option for the Bears, but there is no doubt he would be an upgrade over Trubisky. If the Bears run out Trubisky to start the season in 2020, it will be another disappointing season.
