Chicago Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews will not be joining the team for training camp as he deals with a mysterious medical condition. There's no timetable for his return to the ice.

Toews released a statement on his situation. Here's part of it:

“This offseason, I've been experiencing symptoms that have left me feeling drained and lethargic. I am working with doctors so I can better understand my condition.

“Until I can get my health back to a place where I feel I can perform at an elite level and help my team, I will not be joining the Blackhawks for training camp. I do not have a timetable for when I will rejoin the team. I am extremely disappointed, but it wouldn't be fair to myself or my teammates to attempt to play in my current condition.”

Blackhawks training camp is set to open on Jan. 3, but the focus for Toews is getting his health in order. While it's only natural to speculate that this health issue is related to COVID-19, it's unclear just what the veteran is dealing with.

It has been a rough few days for the Blackhawks in the health department. Just recently, stud youngster Kirby Dach suffered a broken wrist and underwent surgery. Dach will miss four to five months.

Chicago is in a rebuilding phase after a decade of dominance. Toews was a linchpin of a Blackhawks dynasty that won three Stanley Cups in six seasons. With several key players already set to miss significant time this season, Chicago will likely be one of the worst teams in the NHL.
